The Product Didn’t Exist So I Designed, Made, and Sold It
The Problem
I collect LEGO Speed Champions and wanted a display that looked good and was reasonably priced. Everything on the market was too cheap-looking, bulky, or out of my budget. There was not a single ideal display that was clean, modular, and purpose-built for the cars collectors actually own. If I couldn’t find it, many other collectors couldn’t either.
The Why & How
I designed a multicolor modular shelf with interlocking plates, connectors, and pillars that snapped together to mimic real car storage racks. Went through multiple CAD revisions, optimizing for fit, print time, tight tolerances across interlocking parts, and quality. Prototyped, tested, and refined until it was consistent and ready to be brought to market.
I owned everything: manufacturing across a 4-printer fleet, packaging, instructions derived from the CAD models directly, inventory, customer service, and listings on Etsy and eBay. No marketing budget to start as organic growth proved the demand was there. I currently run minimal ads to bring in new customers. Recurring customers proved the product did the talking.
The Output
$20K annual revenue at 40% margin. 8 SKUs. 4.9/5 stars on Etsy, 100% positive feedback on eBay. Customers specifically call out on the quality of design and instructions.
